Do I need to register as self-employed to sell online?

One of the most common worries for online sellers is whether they need to officially register as self-employed. For a lot of people the answer is no. Here is when you do need to, when you do not, and how to do it if you must.

General information, not tax advice. Check with HMRC or a qualified accountant before you act on it.

You only register if you are trading and over £1,000

Two things need to be true before you register. First, you need to be trading, which means buying or making things to sell for a profit, rather than just selling your own belongings. Second, your trading sales in a tax year need to be over £1,000. If either is not true, you normally do not need to register at all.

Selling your own things does not count

If you are clearing out your own wardrobe, old furniture or unwanted gifts, that is not a business and you do not register for it, no matter how much it adds up to. Registration is only for trading.

Under £1,000? The trading allowance covers you

Even if you are trading, the £1,000 trading allowance means you can earn up to £1,000 in sales in a tax year without registering or paying tax. This is measured on your sales before costs, not your profit. Stay under it and there is usually nothing to do.

How to register

If you are over, you register as a sole trader for Self Assessment on the gov.uk website. It is free and fairly quick. HMRC then sends you a Unique Taxpayer Reference, which you need in order to file your tax return later.

The 5 October deadline

You must register by 5 October in the tax year after the one you went over the allowance in. So if you crossed £1,000 during the 2026/27 tax year, you register by 5 October 2027. Registering does not mean you owe tax, it just puts you in the system so you can report.

Being registered is not the same as owing tax

A lot of people register, report their income, and still owe nothing once the trading allowance and their £12,570 personal allowance are taken into account. Registration is about telling HMRC, not about handing over money.
