Do you pay tax on Etsy sales in the UK?
Etsy is a bit different from eBay or Vinted, because most Etsy sellers are making or sourcing things to sell, rather than clearing out their own wardrobe. That usually means Etsy selling counts as trading. Here is what that means for tax.
General information, not tax advice. Check with HMRC or a qualified accountant before you act on it.
Most Etsy selling is trading
If you make things to sell, or buy vintage and craft supplies to sell on, you are trading. That is the normal Etsy setup, and trading can be taxable once you pass the allowances. This is different from Vinted, where a lot of selling is people clearing out their own clothes.
The £1,000 trading allowance
You still get the £1,000 trading allowance. If your total Etsy sales in a tax year are under £1,000, you normally have nothing to report and nothing to pay. Remember it is measured on your sales, before Etsy fees and materials come off, not your profit.
Over £1,000? You might still owe nothing
If you go over, you usually register for Self Assessment. But you then deduct either the flat £1,000 allowance or your real costs (materials, Etsy fees, postage, packaging), and you have your £12,570 personal allowance on top. Many small Etsy sellers owe little or nothing.
Etsy fees are a cost you can claim
If you are trading and using real costs, Etsy's listing fees, transaction fees and payment processing fees are all allowable expenses, along with your materials and postage. Keep a note of them through the year.
One allowance across everything
The £1,000 is one allowance across all your selling put together, not one per platform. If you sell on Etsy and eBay, add the trading sales up before comparing to the limit.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay tax on Etsy sales in the UK?
Only on your profit, and only if your trading sales pass £1,000 in a tax year. Under that, the trading allowance normally covers you.
Can I claim Etsy fees and materials?
Yes. If you are trading and using real costs, Etsy fees, materials, postage and packaging are all allowable expenses.
Is the £1,000 allowance per platform?
No. It is one £1,000 allowance across all your selling combined, so add your Etsy and any other trading sales together.
